The search tactics we won’t use (and what we do instead) | DIYSEO

Intro

If you’ve been researching SEO, you’ve probably noticed there are two very different ways to do it.

One way is fast and tempting: buy links, spin up dozens of thin pages, chase whatever trick is trending this week. It can work …for a while. Then a search-engine update rolls out and most of that traffic disappears overnight, with no warning and no way to get it back. We’ve watched it happen to too many businesses to ever recommend it.

The other way is slower to start but built to last: earn links people actually want, publish content that genuinely helps, and make your site the obvious, correct answer for the people you serve. It compounds. It survives updates. And it’s the only approach we’re willing to put our name on.

Here’s the honest version of what we won’t do, and, what we do instead.

The tactics we won’t use

Buying or selling links to pass ranking value. Paid links and “private blog networks” exist to make a site look stronger than it is. They’re against the rules, they’re detectable, and when they get caught, the whole site pays. We earn links instead by publishing things people want to cite and share.

Mass-producing thin, low-value pages. Churning out hundreds of near-duplicate pages to capture search queries doesn’t help anyone. It’s a liability, not a strategy. We’d rather ship fewer pages that are genuinely worth reading.

Showing search engines something different than your visitors. Cloaking, sneaky redirects, hidden text; any trick that serves one version to bots and another to people is a hard no. We serve one honest version, to everyone.

Fake reviews and fabricated reputation. Flooding a rating space with fake reviews, or building armies of pretend accounts, is both against the rules and just wrong. We let real customers speak.

Attacking competitors. Trying to damage a rival’s rankings or reputation is a losing game. We compete by being more useful, not by breaking someone else.

Gaming AI search. As answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) grow, people are already trying to manipulate them; planting damaging words next to a competitor’s name, forcing flattering associations, faking citations. Same game, new skin, same risk. We position ourselves to be the obvious, correct answer instead.

What we do instead

  • One honest version of everything – the same page for bots and people.
  • Links you’d want anyway – if we wouldn’t feel comfortable telling a customer about it, we don’t do it.
  • Quality over volume – a few pages people love outrank and outlast a thousand nobody asked for.
  • AI as our assistant, not our writer-in-a-vacuum – human judgment is what makes content trustworthy.
  • Consistent brand and entity language everywhere you appear, so search and AI engines learn a clean, single picture of you.
  • Real reviews, real citations, real attention – each one an asset that can’t be wiped by a single update.
  • Assume the update is coming – search engines change constantly. We build like the next update is the only insurance policy that matters.

The 10-second self-check

Before we publish or build anything, we ask:

  • Are we trying to make a search engine think we’re stronger than we are?
  • Would this still work if everyone knew we were doing it?
  • Does a real person get value from this?
  • Could one update erase it?

If any of those flags red, we redirect the effort toward something that would pass the test.

If you’d like to talk about doing this the right way for a specific site, we’re here, no pressure, no jargon.

Want this done right for your site?

We put this approach into practice every day. If you’d like an honest look at
where your site stands and what would actually move the needle, here’s where
to start:

  • SEO audit: a clear, plain-English review of your site’s current
search health and the highest-leverage fixes, no jargon, no upsell.
  • SEO services: ongoing, built-to-last optimization for businesses
that want to rank and convert without the risky shortcuts.
  • Website & content: pages that are the obvious, correct answer for
    the people you serve.
